The Power of Creative Spaces: A Mural Story Born at TOSH

"Creative spaces like TOSH don’t just give you a desk - they give you a community, a sounding board, and sometimes, the starting point for something magical." Learn all about the collaboration between Illustrator, Jenny Tarr and Interior Designer, Lizzie Walkden for Eté cafe in Westbourne.

Hear first hand from Illustrator, Jenny Tarr, about her delicious collaboration with interior designer Lizzie Walkden (Studio Eww), and how it all began right here at TOSH.

"It had been over a year since I’d graduated from my Illustration Masters at AUB, and I needed a dedicated space to work. My kitchen table setup wasn’t cutting it - every day I’d spread my materials across the surface, only to pack them away again before my kids came home from school. I craved somewhere I could leave my work out, and come back with fresh eyes...

Enter TOSH. I’d always loved attending art events here, so when a seat became available in their beautiful coworking space, it felt like the perfect fit. From my very first day, I felt at home. The atmosphere was welcoming, and I found myself surrounded by a community of warm, talented, creative people."

"It was here that I met Lizzie, an incredibly talented interior designer and the creative force behind Studio EWW. I admired her work straight away, and we talked about collaborating one day.

Not long after, I moved around the corner to BEAF's Artist Studios, popping back to TOSH for events, coffee catch-ups, coworking days, and our bi-weekly Start Up Programme sessions. Busy with commissions, collaborations, and personal projects, I never imagined that those casual conversations with Lizzie would soon turn into one of my favourite projects yet.

When Lizzie got in touch to ask if I’d collaborate on the brand and murals for Eté a new slow-living café in Westbourne, it was an instant yes.Two of my deepest values are creativity and connection – and this project was steeped in both.

Eté is all about nourishment, seasonality, and slowing down to notice beauty in the everyday. That’s exactly how I approach my own work: celebrating hand-drawn, imperfect marks and letting creativity unfold naturally.

We began with the logo design - loose, wobbly lines and textured marks that felt alive and human. Once we’d chosen a beautiful hand-drawn logo, I expanded the brand’s visual language with illustrated elements for the mural. We took a tired white wall and transformed it into a joyful, welcoming beacon on the high street. Pears, blossoms, pomegranates, and even an artichoke danced across the surface, painted in fresh, sketchy lines to keep the spontaneity of the original drawings."

"Inside the café, the mural story continues. A painted bicycle greets you on the staircase - a nod to the moment I captured on holiday in France, where I fell in love with the unhurried magic of a simpler pace of life. The staircase is sprinkled with illustrated icons that play with scale and add to the creative, tactile feel of the space.

I love working at large scale - turning neglected, overlooked spaces into places that welcome people in and spark conversation. Murals invite connection, and Eté has been a beautiful example of that."

"Working with Lizzie was a dream. She brought her clear creative vision for the space, while giving me the freedom to explore and innovate. It was a collaboration where our skills complemented each other perfectly, and I’m so proud of what we created together.

...And here’s the thing - without TOSH, none of this would have happened. That single connection over coffee in a shared creative space has led to a project that’s elevated my work, strengthened my network, and brought something truly joyful to a local high street.

Creative spaces like TOSH don’t just give you a desk - they give you a community, a sounding board, and sometimes, the starting point for something magical."
