Event description

Saturday 19th July, 2pm-4pm

This session will be at the B.A.D Gallery in Boscombe: 616-622 Christchurch Rd, BH1 4BP. The gallery is in the Sovereign Centre, and is accessible from the high street.

Join us at B.A.D's exhibition You’re Not Alone: Women in Art 2025 with Sarah Jane Hender - one of the incredible visual artists featured in this Boscombe and Poland based showcase.

Sarah will share:

  • Her journey as an artist, finding her own language
  • How she has got her work out into the world (particularly as a Bournemouth based artist, with a working class background)
  • How she has balanced an arts career with caregiving and domestic life

...And how you can do the same!

Sarah Jane Hender's arts career spans almost twenty years, with years between filled with motherhood and home-educating her child. In Sarah's latest work, she has re-explored and expanded her painting and video language - achieving the CSM Cass Art Award.

"The work I produce is currently drawn from my desire to emulate the many complexities of womanhood. I channel a type of essence from images within faces and bodies I seek to capture or by subverting the real figure into one that sits within an unreal space."

Sarah Jane Hender's work often blurs the lines between real narratives, self-experience, and the imaginary space between, utilising the figurative as conduits for playing with the ideas of the overt feminine and masculine aesthetic and how images can be interpreted as new portrayals through paint and figuration. Touching on the harsh realities women can encounter, whilst reflecting on the body image as objectified.
