Willow bark weaving was once an integral part of any Ukrainian community and to this day is considered a heritage skill that is sadly disappearing. What better time to share skills and cultural knowledge with one another. 100% of workshop proceeds will be donated to support those in Ukraine.
Participants will produce a large coaster out of willow reeds, in traditional Ukrainian fashion. Each person will also come away with a zine describing the process of soaking and preparing willow reeds for their own future projects. The workshop will cover the basics of the best time to harvest and process willow, sustainable harvesting and suitable species; as well as how to create a sturdy and long lasting item. The skills the participants develop mean they should be able to confidently make a basket in their own time if they so wish.
Hosted by Constancia Obolewicz.
Connie’s Grandmother was forced to flee Ukraine when she was younger and sought asylum in Poland, before her family moved to the UK. She was taught how to weave baskets, a skill passed onto her by her Ukrainian family.
We will also gather donated supplies to drop off at the nearest donation stall- Argos Warehouse at Castlepoint.
